Malaysia Welcomes Sixth Prime Minister


KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will witness another historic moment today as it welcomes Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the sixth prime minister with a swearing-in ceremony at Istana Negara.

Najib, 55, who takes over the premiership from Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, will take his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, in a high-key ceremony.

With the passing of the baton, the scion of the second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, is set to carry on the legacies of his predecessors to spur the country to greater success amid the current economic uncertainties.

News of Najib taking over the premiership took centre stage in Malaysia's newspapers today while radio channels kept updating listeners on the historic event.

Invited guests including cabinet ministers and foreign dignitaries started to arrive at Istana Negara from 9am.

The press corps including the foreign media had started to congregate outside the palace gate as early as 8am to cover the event.

The weather was fine and traffic flow on several roads near Istana Negara was relatively smooth.

After the swearing-in, Najib is schedeuled to proceed Masjid Negara for Friday prayers and to visit his father's grave at Makam Pahlawan.

At about 4pm, outgoing prime minister Abdullah will officially hand over the duties to Najib in a ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

In the evening, Najib will return to his Jalan Duta residence for tahlil and doa selamat prayers and will be on air to address the nation at 8.10pm.
